Andean Peru
My first trip to South America was in 1999. I had just finished a year long computer engineering course and I wanted to do some travelling before I started working again. So I took 5 weeks off and headed for Peru and Bolivia. I started in Lima and travelled up to the Peruvian Andes, then headed south to
Bolivia before returning to Lima up the Peruvian coast. You can see the photos of those trips elsewhere on this site.
It was the first time I had made a trip like this and it was a great experience (if you have the opportunity go yourself!). South America is amazing both in terms of its geography and history, and I found the people, both travellers and locals, to be friendly and good craic wherever I went. I enjoyed myself so much I went back 2 years later. So these are some of the photos of my time in Lima and the Peruvain Andes. Enjoy.

While I was travelling out on my own I had arranged to meet a fellow traveller, Corina from Germany (on the left), through the internet. And she had been in contact with Cristian who was from Lima. So before I had touched down I already fallen in with two friendly people that also spoke both Spanish and English. Very helpful as I spoke no Spanish when I arrived at first!

Cristian graciously took us around his home city. Both the modern neighbourhoods like Miaflores and the older part of the city around the Plaze des Armes (now the Plaza Mayor). The plaza is a Unesco world heritage site because of its old colonial buildings. As well as the presidential palace and the Mayor's residence, the Cathedral also faces onto the plaza.

The interior of the Cathedral is sumptuously decorated, with a lavish gold leaf alter.

Outside we ran into a religious procession. This was made up of native indians from Cusco that had travelled to Lima for a festival. Some people carried these large religious statues.

And others danced, played musical instruments or sang. You could see from the participants outfits that a lot of effort seemed to have gone into the event. |
